Gabon’s gorillas: a wild treasure to be preserved

01 August 2025

Gabon is one of the last sanctuaries in the world where gorillas still live in total freedom. These majestic primates, emblems of the country’s rich fauna, evolve peacefully in the dense, lush forests that cover almost 85% of Gabon’s territory.

A protected species at the heart of nature

Western lowland gorillas are now classified as critically endangered. Thanks to the conservation efforts of the Gabonese government and its international partners, the country has become a model of preservation in Central Africa.

These primates can be seen in several national parks, including:

  • Loango National Park, where gorillas live alongside elephants, buffalo and even hippos on the beach,
  • Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, home to one of the highest gorilla densities in the country,
  • Lopé National Park, renowned for its scientific research and programs to accustom gorillas to human presence.

A unique and responsible experience

Watching gorillas in the wild is a moving and unforgettable experience. It’s also a rare privilege, one that takes years and sometimes decades to develop. For those wishing to experience this adventure, permits must be booked through an operator, the funds for which, support local communities and contribute directly to conservation programs.

Each excursion is supervised by passionate eco-guards who conduct the experience with total respect for the animals and the environment, to ensuring that the encounter is not only magical, but above all sustainable.
